Here are some important questions and answers about your vehicles cooling system:
Why does Anti-freeze/coolant need changing?
All anti-freeze/coolant is a blend of Ethylene Glycol with inhibitors (rust & corrosion inhibitors) along with anti-foaming agents, lubricants and PH balanced. The Inhibitors wear out at approximately 2-3 years.
What is the Automobile Manufacturer recommended service (fluid change)?
Typically 2-3 years or 24,000 to 30,000 miles.
If the color is still green and the level is still full, can't the coolant just stay in the system (does green mean good)?
No, absolutely not. Green is simply a dye. Since inhibitors wear out at about 2-3 years, the "coolant" at that point has no ability to protect the various metals in the cooling system.
So, what could possibly happen?
All of our vehicles still use a combustion engine. All those combustion engines are subject to normal wear and tear through use. Culprits are: condensation, oxidation, electrolysis, the act of combustion itself, etc. In other words, our engines still wear out.
Radiators, Heater Cores, Water Pumps, Hoses, Gaskets and Seals are all at risk of failure when there is no inhibitors left to protect them.
How important is it to change the antifreeze/coolant?
The Department of Transportation has found that the #1 reason for mechanical break-down on our highways is due to cooling system failure. That's a fact.
What is "Freeze Protection"?
The word freeze is half of the story. It should be called "Freeze and Boil-Over Protection". The green stuff in your cooling system must protect the engine from freezing in the winter but, also protect the engine from boiling over when the engine gets hot.
The so-called "freeze protection" means how much actual anti-freeze/coolant is combined with water in your engine. You should have 50% coolant to 50% eater at all times.
